What a great idea! I was about to spend a fortune on a hotel for my partner and I to go to Wellington for a wedding, but found a fantastic house swap opportunity on the site. Easy peasy. No problems...

About us

Member ID: 24206

We are a family of 5 Kiwi/Canadians we moved back to NZ in 2015 from BC to help with the rebuild efforts. After bouncing around a couple of of cold post earthquake rentals we bit the bullet and built a super efficient eco-home in the beach side village of Sumner. We are still working on the garden and some finishing on the house but enjoying having our own space to play. We have an overly friendly Cat, Edie and 6 chooks (who are more ornamental than productive!) who would stay with the house. We also have a very energetic 8 month old pup Rue that is doing her best to drive us bonkers but comes with us everywhere so far. We enjoy getting out in the outdoors with the Kids. Lots of surfing and swimming at Sumner and Taylors Mistake beaches, biking and hiking in the hills at our doorstep and ski trips and tramps when time permits. Gabe is a Landscape Architect and gets away hunting and mountain biking when he can. Kristine is a Project Manager at Christchurch City Council and keen artist. Looking forward to connecting with other like minded dog friendly folks interested in house swaps during school holidays. IN the short term looking for a house swap in Queenstown area for second week of July school holidays - 13th to 18th July.

Property description and facilities

Recently built modern two story home located in the beach-side village of Sumner. We are nestled in the head of the valley with the Port Hills on our doorstep. The Beach is 10mins walk away and central Christchurch is around 25mins drive or 40min bike ride.

Well serviced with local shops, several decent cafes/restaurants, library, supermarket, chemist and theater in Sumner and with more shops and restaurants just 10 mins over the hill in Lyttelton.

Great mountain biking, running and walking trails all around us and if you are into surfing, swimming, or fishing, both Sumner and Taylors Mistake beaches are nearby with a heap more around Banks Peninsula to explore.

Large park and playground at the school across the road - good for the kids to ride/skate round and horse riding school just around the corner.

Our house is on a large terraced section with valley views and is designed to be near passive house in energy efficiency. It is triple glazed and super insulated with a Solar PV system and stays nice and cozy year round. Upstairs is finished with native beech floors with main family bathroom for the three kids rooms and ensuite off the master bedroom. Bunk bed in one room, double beds in other two and a super king in the master.

Downstairs has kitchen, laundry, living room and TV room all with pet and kid proof polished concrete floors. Fast Fiber WIFI, netflix, lightbox and TVNZ on demand.

We like to cook so there is a well equipped kitchen and wood fired Pizza oven and BBQ in the outdoor courtyard.

Loads of fruit trees and big vege garden with decent sized lawn and trampoline. Yard is not fully fenced yet so not suitable for pooches to be left out unattended. We have a large dog kennel and indoor crate available if needed.

A few things still being finished off like window sills, some trim and the driveway is still gravel. There is a temporary deck entry on the main slider downstairs connecting to the large concrete courtyard space.

Plenty of off-street parking and can make room in garage for bikes if you are bringing any.

Unless we take them with us a Triple person kayak and mountain bikes available to use.

Location description and facilities

Loads of walks and biking trails in the Port Hills, if you want some more challenge ride along the summit road to the Christchurch Adventure Park for some serious downhill action.

Surfing at local beaches or good surf schools if you want to learn (summer recommended!). Explore the wider peninsula - Akaroa, Okains Bay and many other spots to check out.

Great walk around the coastal cliffs out past the classic kiwi batches at Taylors mistake and boulder bay to the historic gun emplacements at Godley Head.

Ice cream at Utopia a must do and Ms Peppercorn restaurant has as good a Sizchuan food as you will find outside of china. Fish n chips on the beach at sunset - Burger Stop is a good bet for these.

Great windsurfing and kitesurfing in the estuary 10mins down the road during the summer.

Lots of things to do in central Christchurch - Botanic Gardens, restaurants, shops, arts center, Museum etc etc...

Bus stop right across the road with direct route to airport

Pets to care for at this property

There may be pets to care for on this property.

Generally only our friendly cat - Edie and 6 chooks. Edie gets few twice a day and the chooks just need their food topped up every 3-4 days and eggs collected. Happy to get a local kid to come do this if need be.

We do have a dog Rue but she is still a bit of a handful at 8 months so would typically take her with us.
